“Musicians want to be the loud voice for so many quiet hearts,” once said Billy Joel, world renowned singer, songwriter and piano man. And the artist within the musician loves to create. So, it was no surprise to the Rackspace Startup Program when two musicians hanging out in a Montreal coffee shop came up with the idea for Wavo.me, a powerful and simple way to build a library out of music links that you find across the web and then share those discoveries with friends. You can build playlists out of Youtube, SoundCloud or Vimeo links alone, with close friends or a million Justin Bieber fans… it’s completely up to you!
Wavo.me’s Canadian co-founders Conor Clarke, CEO, and Gabriel Lesperance, CTO, are both music bloggers and musicians. From its coffee shop origins, Wavo.me gained momentum in the green rooms of concerts that the co-founders produced; at the startup hub of the local area, Notman House; and at FounderFuel accelerator, where the concept was eventually molded and shaped. With the help and support of Rackspace, Wavo.me found a reliable and robust infrastructure upon which to build its mass consumer product.
“We realized that the entire digital music industry is completely fractured. If you’re a fan, the places you find your music – blogs, social networks and charts – are completely cut off from the places you save your music,” explains Conor Clarke. “Or on the flip side, if you’re a musician you’ll get your music trending on Hypem, but the conversion funnel to your fan-page on Facebook is terrible, so even if you have the number one song in the blogosphere for the day you may only get a hundred Facebook fans. And that makes no sense, and we’ve experienced that pain personally within our music careers. We wanted to bring it all together into one incredibly simple platform that connects the digital dots of the music industry and do away with all those inefficiencies once and for all.”
What drives the passion at Wavo.me? “Transforming the music industry!” say Clarke. “The industry has been broken for so long, and we’ve had the opportunity to see that in effect from so many angles as bloggers, event producers and musicians. Music has always been our passion, and being able to create something that helps push it forward on the web pushes us forward. Wavo.me is one of the first truly social music services and a great way to save and share songs. Early feedback with fans is amazing and we think that’s because we fit into their existing user habits perfectly. So the next step will be to make this just as addictive and valuable for the industry.”
