Within the real estate industry, technology is replacing the old tried and not-so-true method of print advertising when marketing residential rentals. Within the Rackspace Startup Program we have seen a rise in the number of startups focusing on Software as a Service (SaaS) applications for real estate. One such startup is Y Combinator alumni YouGotListings which is a residential rentals marketing and management software for brokers and landlords.
In 2006, as a side project, Gordon Chen, Founder of YouGotListings, created a real estate website and back end for a friend who was starting a Boston rental agency. His friend’s agency was then approached by a company selling a rental technology platform. Gordon felt that this technology could be improved and realized that there was a need for a high-value technology platform for the rentals industry.
With the help of fellow engineer John Li, they created an online rental technology platform for real estate offices and landlords which provide a community of agencies, brokers, and landlords with the tools to manage, organize, and advertise real estate rental listings. YouGotListings was officially formed in Boston in January 2009. The company’s platform enables users to advertise their listings with professional advertisement posting, a personal Website, and social media integration. The software allows landlords and brokers to message each other about properties and an Android and iPhone app makes it easy for brokers to view listings on the go.
“Real estate is an industry where technology innovations move much slower than others. Seeing our product being adopted and used to greatly improve an office or broker’s daily life gives us a great sense of accomplishment, which fuels our passion to push forward.” Explains founder Gordon Chen. “We are a group of engineers, not salesmen. Our primary goal is to keep our current customers happy through an always-improving, high-value product, instead of concentrating on marketing or sales.”
In 2012, YouGotListings is looking into the future to allow their SaaS system to accommodate all types of real estate beyond just residential rentals. The Rackspace Startup Program is anticipating great things yet to come from YouGotListings. Do you have a startup in mind for launch in 2012?
