More Insights, Transparency and Control Now Available on Rackspace Private Cloud

At Rackspace, we strive to provide our customers with the tools and capabilities to help them maximize ROI.  That’s why we’re pleased to announce the addition of three new advanced cloud optimization features: chargeback, user access and dynamic threshold capabilities.

These new features improve the customer experience by offering additional visibility, operational insights, better transparency and more control of their cloud environment. They complement our existing capacity planning, real time analytics and visualization capabilities; all are now part of our market-leading private cloud as a service solution. The newest features will be available at no additional charge to Rackspace OpenStack Private Cloud customers.

Chargeback calculates the allocation of compute, network and storage resources to allow accounting of costs to the appropriate departments based on configurable rate cards. It calculates monthly invoices, month-to-date costs and projected monthly costs. These capabilities allow your administrators to more effectively and efficiently manage their private cloud resources.

The user access capabilities provide developers visibility into their virtual machines, helping them to setup alarms and manage their own application environment. This feature enables your administrators to provide more data to their users and offload aspects of operating services and applications for optimal performance.

Alarms and notifications are set using thresholds that tell the monitoring system when to trigger an alert.  Traditionally, these are manually-set static thresholds that work well when the absolute value of the threshold is known and doesn’t change. Dynamic thresholds, on the other hand, are adaptable to workloads with variable loads at different times of the day, or when applications are run in heterogeneous hardware resources.

Dynamic thresholds allow a user to specify a metric and a baseline learning period. This in turn allows the platform to learn and set the thresholds accurately for that metric based on the learning.  Through this machine-based learning capability, it saves users time by efficiently and effectively creating the right metric thresholds.

Krishna Durairaj is a Senior Director of Product Management in the Rackspace OpenStack Private Cloud business. A Racker since 2011, he has led Product Management for Compute, Network and Storage for the Rackspace Public Cloud and for the Rackspace Networking product portfolio. Prior to Rackspace, Krishna served as Director of Product Development at Citrix and was responsible for launching virtualized network optimization and application acceleration appliances on different hypervisors. He has held various technology leadership roles in startups and large technology companies building several products from network routers to software applications. Krishna holds a bachelor's degree in engineering from Anna University and a master's degree in electrical engineering from Clemson University. He lives in Austin, TX with his family and enjoys photography, running and numismatics.
