Case Study: Rackspace Gives Major League Gaming (MLG) the Power of Scale

Major League Gaming (MLG)[1] operates one of the largest online professional video game leagues in the world, supporting million of players worldwide. They run a high traffic website for resource-heavy applications with user posts, game demos, recordings of past competitions, along with other game-related media. With the type of growth they were experiencing and plan to continue to experience, they needed a provider to assume the burdensome task of maintaining their infrastructure as well as support the traffic demands of their website. This would allow them to launch applications faster – the core of their business.

One of the unique needs of MLG was a cloud-based environment to handle peak loads but could still support dedicated network and security-sensitive applications. Often times, with needs like this, you would need to use two providers – one for cloud and one for dedicated. With Rackspace, MLG could host their entire solution in one place with Hybrid Hosting[2].  They can use Cloud Servers[3] for instant scale and dedicated gear[4] for I/O and security-sensitive network applications – more importantly, they are connected.

Brian Corrigan, CTO of MLG, has been pleased with the outcome, quoting:

Hybrid and the ability to scale on demand becomes the new table stakes in the online world. You’re at a disadvantage if you don’t have it.

He goes on to talk about the benefits he’s seen including increased speed, reduce cost and the relief of having a support rep to call.
