Cloud Founders: A Cloud By Any Other Name…

Before Cloud Sites, our Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) product was called The Hosting System; prior to the launch cloud founders Jonathan Bryce and Todd Morey needed to name the company that would offer the product.

They were stuck thinking of a company name, and even hired a “naming expert,” but nothing worked for the duo.  Anyone who has registered a domain knows how difficult it can be to get a good dot com name.

The team had 10 names on a short list, and they were going to meet with Rackspace leadership to choose one. However, prior to the meeting, neither Jonathan nor Todd felt comfortable with any names on that list. So the night before the meeting they started brainstorming new ones.

The guys got on a music kick and were thinking of names like orchestra, conductor and symphony. They then started thinking of different musical terms and stumbled onto the term piu mosso, which means to play the music with more intensity and emotion. Both guys liked the term mosso because it was easy to say, five letters and captured the fact that their solution allowed people to work with more intensity on their code and website without having to worry about the hosting.

Jonathan and Todd looked up the website and saw it was not being used and knew that this was the name they wanted. They called up a graphic designer friend to create a logo that night so that they could go in with a name and design to try to persuade the leadership team to select Mosso as the name. The rest, as they say, is history.
