Desks are being cleared, boxes are being filled and memories are being shared around The Rackspace Cloud office. The new Rackspace headquarters, “The Castle,” is now ready to house Cloud Rackers. This is our last week at the beautiful downtown San Antonio Weston Centre. What started as 10 employees on the 12th floor has grown to 150 employees on the 4th floor. It is a bittersweet move as we are like a little family here but are excited to join our mother ship.
Damian Green, Rackspace Cloud Account Manager, wrote a kind email to The Rackspace Cloud staff on what this move means to him.
I know I usually send customer awareness emails or helpful support tips but I thought I’d spin out something different. I’ll try to keep this short but wanted to share my thoughts. I started with Mosso Jan 14th of 2008 in a tiny little office on the 12th floor, which at the time, was the strangest thing in the world to me. Walking in the first day, I had to build my desk by scratch and searched all over the place for a screwdriver to do it – certainly not an experience I ever had in my working career. This experience, combined with many others, has definitely left an incredible impression on me. The “down home feel” atmosphere has allowed me some tremendous growth and awesome opportunities.
From there, we moved to where we are now on the 4th floor, and still only filled the smaller portion of the floor. I remember laughing at how big it was and thinking we’d never fill it. We are now at a point where some of us are sharing a desk or we back into each other if we move our chair back too far, and there are still new faces arriving each day. Although we’ve grown tremendously, I feel we’ve kept our family feel and I don’t want us to lose that. We’re about to enter “the real world” by moving to “The Castle,” and that’s scary in a way. I’ve feared it because I feel like we are moving into someone else’s turf.
The first time we toured The Castle, Crystal (Billing Specialist) and I strayed off course and I said to her, “Are you sure we won’t get in trouble?” Over the last few weeks I began thinking of this a bit differently. We are the motion…it’s about traction in the Cloud…we are Rackspace. We are not moving into someone else’s territory but rather finally getting to go home. When we get there, we have so many stories and ideas to share. We, the adventurers, now get to go to the elders and learn some of their wisdom and also share what we have experienced and learned in our adventures. We get to make the changes that last forever and we get to grow day after day. So as we move to The Castle, and the Weston Centre days become myth and legend, let’s take with us all that we have learned and be ready to share, now that we have come home. I can’t wait to see you all at The Castle!
