How Performance Cloud Servers Are Delivering Measurable Impact

Since releasing Performance Cloud Servers late last year, we’ve been thrilled by the response from customers. We knew that enhancing speed, throughput, reliability and scalability would be embraced, but it’s still heartening to hear about the measurable impact directly from customers. Fanatical Support as a high-performing type of service was also a common theme in these customer stories.

Below, we highlight some of the most tangible performance gains we’ve seen and heard about.

More Bang for the Buck

Glassdoor, which provides intelligence gathering for employers and employees, on everything from salaries to candid reviews, is using Performance Cloud Servers to power transparency and grow its platform. Combining the new performance boost with Cloud Intelligence, they were able to zero in on potential bottlenecks and achieve economies of scale

In his recent post, Barry Klawans, who serves as both Architect and DevOps specialist at Glassdoor, said, “We migrated over to these higher-powered cloud servers and used Cloud Intelligence to see how they performed. Instantly, we noticed that our network utilization had just doubled. But that wasn’t the only upshot to the migration. With Performance Cloud Servers, we were able to run fewer CPUs and higher memory, at about the same cost. We were getting more bang for the buck.”

Making the Pipe Bigger

In his post about how the cloud is revolutionizing Hollywood, Guillaume Aubochon, CTO of DigitalFilm Tree, invokes the infamous line from Jaws: “We’re gonna need a bigger pipe.” But instead of killing a monster shark, he meant it to suggest the battle of storing 36 terabytes of shooting footage every day. His company provides a cloud-based, full-service, pre- and post-production facility for the movie industry’s biggest names.

Using OpenStack as a standard, Guillaume has managed to solve some of the burdens of sharing content between studios and production facilities. Performance Cloud Servers are at the center of this massive collaboration project.

As Guillaume explains, “Since architecting our business model on OpenStack and using Rackspace Performance Cloud Servers, we’ve seen a 10X improvement in our performance and a significant reduction in costs, mostly by not having to throw money and bandwidth at the problem.”

Preparing for the Peak

With over 21 million registered users, MapMyFitness has become a global brand and a symbol of everything healthy and connected. Its members can use over 400 different devices to instantly track their fitness results through GPS and watch their results grow over time. The company’s data and compute requirements are massive, to say the least. They combine the power of the Rackspace Performance Cloud Servers with dedicated servers in our hybrid cloud portfolio. Like us, MapMyFitness understands that the public cloud alone isn’t the best fit for every workload. But when extra muscle is needed in the form of scaling for peak traffic, the high performance public cloud is just the ticket.

In his guest post, Jesse Demmel, Vice President of Engineering at MapMyFitness, says, “We migrated from the previous generation of Rackspace Cloud Servers to Rackspace Performance Cloud Servers. Everything we’ve seen in the testing and production is phenomenal. We’re getting 5 times better performance out of the Performance Cloud Severs that come with SSD storage, 40Gbps throughput to host and flavors up to 120GB.”

The Power of SSD Storage

One of our earliest customers and partners to try Performance Cloud Servers was of Bitlancer, which helps businesses move to and grow in cloud environments. They often have customers with workloads that require consistent and fast I/O across multiple cloud environments.

When the founder of Bitlancer, Matt Juszczak, wrote a guest post and delivered his test results back in January, he commented about the value of SSD storage: “The addition of SSDs to Cloud Servers delivers a solution for fast, unpredictable growth when your application isn’t specifically engineered for it. This is great for everyone, but ideal for startups that may not be ready for rapid success and growth…using SSDs is no longer considered ‘throwing hardware at the problem,’ as the price to performance ratio has swung in favor of performance.”

Moving on to the Performance Cloud Servers test results, Juszczak said, “we experienced a near 6X performance boost between the ‘Next Generation 30GB’ and the ‘Performance 30GB’ instance, with only 13 percent (a little more than 1x) cost difference. Translation: the cost-for-performance makes Performance Cloud Servers a no-brainer.”

5X to 10X overall performance gain while the cost heads in the other direction. Or doubled network utilization with fewer CPUs and more memory for the same cost. These are tangible results we’re truly excited about.

But we’re also excited to hear about the human impact of our cloud specialists and their commitment to customer success. Our web-scale engineers and cloud experts fuel the power of Performance Cloud Servers, a perfect complement to the SSD storage and 40 Gbps to-the-host-throughput and our massive memory options. That level of support “has helped MapMyFitness perform at our best,” says Demmel.

Thanks to all our Performance Cloud customers who’ve sent us their stories.

If you’re a customer using Performance Cloud Servers, either standalone or with a hybrid solution, we’d love to hear how they’re affecting your bottom line. We’d also love to hear how our expertise and Fanatical Support is making a difference.
