Intel’s Highest Performance Processor, Now with Rackspace Fanatical Support

The newest, fastest Intel Xeon Scalable Processor is now available to all Rackspace customers on Dell’s 14th generation PowerEdge server, the R740xd.

The newest Intel processor, codename Skylake, offers higher performance, denser virtualization (meaning you can do more with fewer processors) and more flexible storage options.

And did we mention higher performance? Skylake now holds more than 110 world records for performance, according to IT Online, delivering “up to 2x the flops per click and 63 percent better performance” across common high performance computing applications compared to previous generations.

That performance is critical for companies like LKQD Technology, a video advertising infrastructure company that serves three million inbound requests every second. That’s roughly 800 billion events every day.

Because its high-performance needs came with an equally high price tag on public cloud, LKQD came to Rackspace seeking the same (or better) highly scalable performance, but at a lower cost.

Switching to a Rackspace managed hosting solution gave LKQD access to the then-latest Intel Xeon processor E5 v4 processors, which it runs on bare metal, optimizing performance and significantly reducing the footprint it would have otherwise needed.

Now, LKQD is testing Skylake.

With Skylake, LKQD can utilize more cores, increase IPC counts and take advantage of even higher memory bandwidth.

“We have the potential of going from 22 cores to 28 cores, a 50 percent increase in memory channels and 20 percent more PCIe lanes,” said Christophe Clapp, LKQD CTO and co-founder. “That would greatly enhance our per-server performance.”

The increased compute performance and scalability LKQD Technologies will see from Skylake will be key to supporting the company’s continued explosive growth — it’s now the second largest U.S. advertising platform, with double digit annual growth.

Intel and Rackspace have a long history of delivering enterprise compute power with best-in-class managed services. For more than 15 years, we’ve offered Rackspace’s Fanatical Support on top of Intel’s best in class hardware.

With the availability of Intel’s Xeon Scalable platform now available to all customers on Dell’s 14th Generation PowerEdge server, Rackspace and Intel offer a solution that can:

  • Lower total cost of ownership: Increased socket level performance, higher core counts, scaled out storage options, 10G networking, advanced security and serviceability features means customers need less infrastructure allowing for a lower TCO
  • Stand up against cyber-attacks: With TPM 2.0, secure erase, system erase, and secure boot the platform is designed as part of cyber resilient architecture
  • Deliver Greater Virtualization Density: The latest server platform allows for denser server virtualization, so you can do more with fewer servers
  • Provide More Flexible Storage Options and Storage: the versatility of this platform allows us to combine different drive types – SSDs, large capacity HDDs, and NVMe to optimize for performance, capacity, or both.

“Given the demand [LKQD has] for high performance computing, the needs they have for low latency, products like our new Intel Xeon Scalable Processors really are a perfect fit,” said Jeff Wittich, director of Cloud Service Provider Business at Intel of LKQD Technologies. “Being able to take advantage of the performance benefits of the latest processors is a huge advantage in being able to achieve business agility, and then also the savings they receive from it are really key as well.”
