Rackspace now supports Red Hat OpenStack Platform 11, with improvements that streamline the upgrades process and help customers get faster access to the latest OpenStack features and security updates.
Part of Rackspace Private Cloud powered by Red Hat, which delivers private cloud as a service, Platform 11 continues to mature the OpenStack ecosystem, furthering its suitability as a leading enterprise cloud platform.
Rackspace and Red Hat collaboration has advanced OpenStack private cloud capabilities for enterprises by architecting, engineering, deploying and operating a fully supported and certified OpenStack solution. Rackspace Private Cloud powered by Red Hat leverages each company’s expertise in packaging open source software and operating clouds at scale, respectively, so you don’t have to.
Read on to learn more about the latest features of Platform 11, based on Ocata, the 15th community release of OpenStack.
Composable services, custom roles and upgrades
For Red Hat OpenStack Platform installation, Red Hat OpenStack Platform director has predefined roles that contain a set of services called out in the OpenStack Orchestration (Heat) template collection.
Composable services were introduced in Platform 10, allowing OpenStack operators to create custom roles by selecting services and associating them with those roles. This allowed for combination or separation of services in a role, based on specific needs, such as underlying compute hardware in the overcloud.
In Platform 11, Red Hat has introduced composable upgrades, making Red Hat OpenStack Platform deployment and upgradability “more adaptable and consistent,” according to Red Hat, while also retaining the important aspects of lifecycle management.
Red Hat has also added functionality to Platform 11 that improves the integration of Red Hat CloudForms, its hybrid cloud management platform, with OpenStack. Red Hat CloudForms can now access and control OpenStack regions, multiple domains and host aggregates, for a more unified controller view of cloud health and efficiency.
Red Hat OpenStack Platform 11 also has several newly supported CloudForms features, including:
- tenant mapping,
- multisite support,
- multiple domains, and
- cinder volume snapshot management.
Changes to Red Hat OpenStack Platform support lifecycle
With Red Hat OpenStack Platform 10, Red Hat introduced a varying support lifecycle for every third release, with three-year support and an optional two year extension. It’s important to note that Red Hat OpenStack Platform 11 has a one year support lifecycle, after which customers are encouraged to upgrade to Red Hat OpenStack Platform 12 (based on OpenStack Pike). The next three-year supported version will be Red Hat OpenStack Platform 13, based on OpenStack Queens.
The Rackspace support and operations team will upgrade your cloud to Red Hat OpenStack Platform 11 using Red Hat OpenStack Platform director for complete lifecycle management. The team performs upgrades with minimal impact to your Red Hat OpenStack Platform environments by leveraging automation and live migration of your instances.
