Commissions Inc. Increases Performance and Stability with Rackspace Hybrid Cloud

Real Estate Technology Company Uses Rackspace to Process 500 Million Web Requests and 20 TB of Data Each Month; Seeks Out Customer Service Best-Practices with Rackspace NPS Masters Program

SAN ANTONIO – Dec. 16, 2015 – Rackspace® (NYSE: RAX), the #1 managed cloud company, today announced that Commissions Inc., (CINC)SM, a platform solution for real estate brokers and agents to communicate with leads and future clients, is using Rackspace for a hybrid cloud solution to power its high-growth real estate technology business. By leveraging RackConnect® to combine the scalability of Rackspace Public Cloud and the performance of dedicated servers, CINC can quickly spin up servers as its business grows, while managing large amounts of property data in a dedicated environment.

CINC has been a Rackspace customer since its inception in 2011. As CINC developed into one of the fastest growing real estate technology companies in North America, it evolved its Rackspace environment from a full-cloud model to a hybrid model to help increase performance and stability. With Rackspace Hybrid Cloud, CINC is able to handle more than 500 million web requests and process more than 20 TB of data each month, while serving up web requests within 150-250 milliseconds. Additionally, the Rackspace Hybrid Cloud gives CINC the redundancy it needs to process 40-50 million photos and data for millions of properties from multiple listing service (MLS) feeds across the U.S. and Canada each day and store the data on the cloud and dedicated servers.

“CINC powers some of the most elite real estate teams in the country, and we realized early on that our focus needed to be on building innovative features for our clients and staying ahead of our competitors rather than managing day-to-day IT operations,” said Brian O’Neal, CTO at CINC. “Rackspace has seamlessly filled this need for our business by operating as an extension of our in-house IT team. The CINC platform demands high performance and reliability across a huge user base and dataset, but no challenge is too big with Rackspace managing the IT backend. It is that sort of integrated approach that makes our relationship with Rackspace invaluable.”

In its six-year relationship with Rackspace, CINC has seen exceptional customer service backed by Fanatical Support® manifest in various ways including 10-hour conference calls, proactive consultations on weekends and troubleshooting at 4 a.m. on the Fourth of July. To illustrate the value of the technology powering its application, CINC successfully called Rackspace live and unplanned onstage at a real estate brokerage conference to prove to attendees that its cloud provider would answer in less than two rings. According to CINC, it is this commitment to Fanatical Support that drove the company to seek out the Rackspace Net Promoter Score (NPS) Masters Program training. This one-day immersion session teaches companies how to maximize the effectiveness of their customer loyalty efforts with NPS™ best-practices from Rackspace experts.

“Rackspace makes us feel as though we’re their only client,” said Jason Hoback, president of CINC. “It is that attentiveness and dedication that makes them successful in the managed cloud space, and is something we would love to emulate in the real estate technology sector. When we heard that Rackspace offered an NPS best-practices course for its customers, we knew we wanted to put our entire workforce of more than 100 employees through the training. CINC operates in a competitive market, and we need to deliver world-class service and product offerings to stay a step ahead. Any insights we can get from service experts who are recognized on a global scale like Rackspace are a huge asset.”

Rackspace uses NPS for core customer intelligence that allows the company to isolate patterns, set priorities and gauge performance across a global enterprise with more than 300,000 customers. In the NPS Masters Program, Rackspace shares the tools and techniques that the company has mastered over 17 years to deliver and maintain exceptional support, presented by the leaders and developers of the Rackspace enterprise NPS program. The program is free of charge for Rackspace customers and non-customers alike.

“Rackspace is known as the number one practitioner of NPS in our industry,” said Julian Lopez, director of customer loyalty at Rackspace. “As our reputation for world-class support spreads, more customers like CINC are asking us to mentor them on enterprise-scale NPS and provide best-practices for balancing outstanding customer service with rapid business growth. Helping customers succeed is in our DNA at Rackspace. We’re thrilled to have conducted our largest NPS Masters Program to date with CINC, and look forward to seeing how they will innovate service in the real estate technology space in the future.”

Medable Taps Rackspace to Help Solve Compliance and Performance Concerns for Healthcare IT App Developers

HIPAA Compliant PaaS Solution Taps Rackspace Hybrid Cloud to Help Enhance Speed, Performance and Security for Customers

LOS ANGELES – Nov. 17, 2015 – Rackspace® (NYSE: RAX) today announced that Medable, an application and analytics platform for healthcare, is utilizing a hybrid cloud environment with Rackspace Public Cloud and Private Cloud to help deliver a high-performing and secure API to its customers. The announcement took place at the Rackspace::Solve™ conference in Los Angeles, which featured Rackspace experts, customers and partners discussing how they solve their toughest IT challenges.

Palo Alto-based Medable offers an end-to-end platform-as-a-service (PaaS) solution for developers to create medical-grade, HIPAA compliant applications. According to Medable, the company reduces development time from a year-and-a-half to weeks by mitigating security risks, offloading HIPAA compliance requirements and providing data visualization tools. To provide optimized security and near real-time device visualization, Medable relies on Rackspace Managed Cloud, combining Public Cloud and Rackspace Private Cloud powered by OpenStack®, for speed, interoperability, performance and security.

“Our customers come to us so they can meet compliance requirements, so we must have the necessary infrastructure, physical security and safeguards in place for our offering,” said Tim Smith, CTO at Medable. “We rely very heavily on Rackspace for this, and we are impressed with their products and services, branded as Fanatical Support®, they provide to help us meet the needs of our customers. Every technical inquiry is addressed quickly and collaboratively, as though they are an extension of our in-house IT team.”

Rackspace assists Medable in providing its secure healthcare API to customers and collecting meaningful longitudinal data. Device companies use the platform to deliver device data to doctors and patients for immediate care. Additionally, Medable customers can aggregate meaningful data on outcomes for multiple patients suffering from the same medical issue to generate predictive algorithms.

To achieve the proximity and speed needed for this data analysis and near real-time device visualization, Medable relies on Rackspace global infrastructure, which includes global datacenters in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. With this global reach, Medable is able to analyze, aggregate and graphically display data in near real-time for customers all over the world, including a customer in Switzerland collecting data across 5-10 physiologic parameters from each of its wearable devices.

According to the IDC Futurescape: Worldwide Healthcare 2016 Predictions, “Virtual care will become routine by 2018. Over the next 5 years, 80 percent of consumer service interactions will make use of the Internet of Things (IoT) and big data to improve quality, value and timeliness.” Additionally, “By 2018, industry cloud creation will be the top market entry strategy for tech providers and industrial companies, as leaders of IT and industry domain unite to tear down traditional barriers to entry.“ 1

“We are in the infancy of mobile patient care, but as healthcare moves to mobile and web, many companies will seek providers that can reduce the barriers to entry around security and HIPAA compliance,” said Dr. Michelle Longmire, CEO of Medable and physician-scientist at Stanford. “Medable is on the forefront of this transformation in how healthcare is delivered, and we need a managed cloud provider that can address our unique needs. In the future, we could be processing thousands of data points from millions of humans across the globe for each of our customers. With Rackspace Managed Cloud powering our platform, we are confident we can achieve that scalability and potential.”

With hybrid solutions available at Rackspace, Medable can scale to accommodate the growing number of applications in the healthcare industry. The security of a dedicated instance allows Medable to house its customers’ sensitive data in its private cloud. In instances where protected health information (PHI) does not factor in, such as pass-through load balancing or notification workers and queues, Medable can burst into the public cloud to analyze and graphically display large data sets in near real-time.

“Rackspace has a broad portfolio of offerings that allow customers the ability to scale their business with their choice of public, private and hybrid cloud technologies across multiple industry-leading platforms,” said John Engates, CTO at Rackspace. “Companies like Medable that are front-and-center in high-growth industries, such as mobile and web in healthcare, seek out Rackspace for its expertise and Fanatical Support for solutions that best fit their business needs. With Rackspace powering the backend IT infrastructure, Medable can focus on innovating and growing its business of providing enterprise architecture at Internet scale in the healthcare industry.”

International Military Antiques Fortifies Ecommerce Site with Rackspace Digital

Military Antique Reseller Navigates Surging Growth and High-Traffic Events with Rackspace Digital Expertise for Magento

SAN ANTONIO – Nov. 11, 2015 – Rackspace® (NYSE: RAX), the #1 managed cloud company, today announced that International Military Antiques (IMA), the world’s leading retailer of pre-1945 military collectibles and antiques, is leveraging Rackspace Managed Cloud to power its Magento ecommerce environment. With the flexibility of Magento, Rackspace Digital practice area expertise and Fanatical Support®, IMA achieves a responsive ecommerce site optimized to scale for traffic spikes associated with the holiday season and television appearances.

Founded in 1981, IMA possesses thousands of military antique items spanning 500 years of world history and has supplied extremely rare original military pieces, including weapons, muskets and swords from the Revolutionary War and uniforms from WWII, to some of the world’s most prominent museums and major Hollywood productions. The company operated strictly as a mail-order business until 2004, when it created its first ecommerce website. As its online presence took off, IMA increasingly experienced growing pains with scalability and integration of other ecommerce tools. In 2010, IMA turned to Rackspace to power its cloud Magento ecommerce site with optimal performance and flexibility. Magento offers customization and seamless integration of digital tools that are integral to IMA’s ecommerce success.

“Magento is the perfect platform for our business model, but with zero technical staff and 99 percent of sales done through online sales marketplaces, we don’t have time to manage everything in-house,” said Alex Cranmer, VP of International Military Antiques and military antiques expert for the History Channel’s “Pawn Stars.” “Rackspace has been an invaluable asset for IMA because of its deep digital expertise and Fanatical Support. Our team at Rackspace goes above and beyond to help us drive innovation within our site as we grow and stand up to high traffic events like Halloween and Black Friday.”

Rackspace has helped IMA, which has experienced 1000x online growth since launching its first ecommerce site, build out a mobile presence and optimize its responsive Magento website for high traffic events such as the premier of the IMA reality show “Family Guns” on National Geographic. According to IMA, the show generated a 300 percent increase in traffic with as many as 18,000 concurrent visitors, and the company experienced zero downtime. Similarly, Rackspace works with IMA to prepare its site for the holiday season, in which traffic more than doubles, with as many as 20,000 unique visitors each day.

“Magento is a powerful, cutting-edge platform, but it can be difficult for customers to use it to its full potential without the necessary expertise required to architect the best environment,” said Kyle Metcalf, general manager of the Digital practice area at Rackspace. “Our Rackspace Digital practice area experts help customers get the most out of their ecommerce environments, fine-tuning the infrastructure behind the app, so customers like IMA can deliver a seamless, responsive ecommerce experience year-round.”

Rackspace provides specialized hosting for ecommerce and content applications on a variety of platforms, with 24x7x365 support. Experts use platform-specific best practices to help customers architect an ecommerce environment with optimal speed, uptime and reliability.

This year, Rackspace is rated the #1 hosting provider for the Internet Retailer™ Top 1,000. To learn more about Rackspace Digital solutions, visit http://www.rackspace.com/digital.

Rackspace Survey Uncovers Massive Disconnect Between CMOs and CIOs in E-Commerce and Digital Marketing

Survey Reveals 92 Percent of Marketing Leaders and 75 Percent of IT Leaders Are Looking for More Integration Between These Two Teams

San Antonio – Nov. 2, 2015 – Only 14 percent of surveyed marketing leaders and 17 percent of surveyed IT leaders feel that they are currently very integrated, according to a new survey released today by Rackspace®(NYSE: RAX), the #1 managed cloud company. The U.S. study, Marketing and IT: Overcoming a Cats-and-Dogs History to Create a Seamless Customer Experience, sheds light on the differences in IT and marketing teams’ priorities, the way they struggle to work together, how they perceive one another, and what is needed to improve their working relationship in today’s world of digital marketing. The findings underscore the need for IT and marketing to find common ground as they are increasingly tasked with working together on digital marketing and e-commerce strategy and execution. There is also a growing demand for third party experts to get them there.

According to the survey, the challenges start right from the beginning with different personalities and outlooks on either side. Marketers see themselves as cooperative and extroverted, while they see IT as nerdy and data-driven. However, IT team members see themselves as realistic, but still cooperative. The upshot is, both sides feel misunderstood. Of those surveyed, only 19 percent of IT leaders think marketing understands what they do, while fewer than one in 10 marketing leaders think IT leaders understand what they do.

“IT and marketing used to function as two completely separate entities, free to operate as they saw fit, with their idiosyncrasies and stereotypes,” said Kyle Metcalf, General Manager of Rackspace Digital. “But the rapid growth of digital marketing and e-commerce pushed these two groups together. And if these groups are at odds, it can cause the customer experience to slip. Our survey unveils some of the reasons behind the disconnect and where the groups have opportunities to pull together.”

The No. 1 frustration on both sides is the disagreement over speed. The top frustration among surveyed marketing leaders (46 percent) is that IT does not work quickly enough, and the No. 1 frustration among surveyed IT leaders (47 percent) is that marketing wants IT to move too quickly, potentially compromising quality and security.

Though marketing and IT continue to see the world differently — marketing leaders see strategy as the key success driver, while IT leaders think success depends on a skilled workforce — they do agree on one thing. Both sides see that they are currently not integrated or communicating well, and they agree that they want to be more integrated. Ninety-two percent of surveyed marketing leaders and 75 percent of surveyed IT leaders are looking for more integration between these two critical teams.

Marketing and IT leaders are also aligned on a path forward — they see a true partnership with common goals, common language and frequent communication as keys to a successful, integrated relationship. Further, of respondents surveyed, 70 percent or more of both groups believe a neutral third party can make that collaboration easier. A full-service managed cloud provider [like Rackspace] can power the high-traffic websites and large ecommerce stores that both IT and marketing want to create.

Carina™ By Rackspace Simplifies Containers with Easy-To-Use, Instant-On Native Container Environment

Containers Utilizing Bare-Metal Performance and Native Container Tooling and Orchestration

Tokyo – Oct. 28, 2015 – Rackspace® (NYSE: RAX) today announced the free beta offering of Carina by Rackspace, an easy-to-use and instant-on native container environment, at the OpenStack® Summit. Carina focuses on portability and ease-of-use while allowing a customer to create and deploy a cluster for their containerized applications faster than doing it themselves. Carina is a container cluster service offering that leverages bare-metal performance, Docker Engine, native container tooling and Docker Swarm for orchestration that make container clusters accessible to everyone.

Carina provides an intuitive, instant-on and portable container environment with existing Docker tools and bare metal performance for developers, data scientists and operators. With Carina, customers get a “zero infrastructure” container environment where Rackspace experts manage the infrastructure and Docker environment for customers. This approach offers increased efficiency, as customers no longer need to spend time on building, managing and updating their container environment.

Container technology is one of the fastest-growing software development tools in the computing industry today. The technology offers multiple benefits, including improved application portability across development, test and production environments.  Containers consume a fraction of the compute resources of typical virtual machines, allowing for near-instant availability, application scaling and increased application density, allowing customers to save time and money.

“At Rackspace, our mission is to give customers industry-leading service and expertise on the world’s leading technologies. Carina extends this mission as part of our strategy to support OpenStack’s position as a leading choice for enterprise clouds,” said Scott Crenshaw, SVP, strategy and product at Rackspace. “Carina design makes containers fast, simple and accessible to developers using native container interfaces, while leveraging the infrastructure capabilities of OpenStack.”

Carina delivers the following benefits to help customers increase their pace of innovation and speed to market:

  • Container-Native Tools – Unlike many platforms that implement containers using proprietary or emulated tooling, Carina uses the native Docker API and tooling, which provides developers the freedom to easily move applications from development to test to production environments, while helping to reduce errors and saving time.
  • Bare-Metal Performance – Containers sit on top of the server, which helps eliminate hypervisor overhead, allowing faster application performance.
  • Easy Install and Support – With instant-on setup, choice of customer interfaces such as Docker Swarm to create clusters, best-practice documentation as well as guides and community forum support backed by Rackspace expertise, customers are able to start quickly and get support directly from other developers.

“Carina by Rackspace gives us a way to easily offer containers to the thousands of people who come to the O’Reilly web site to learn programming and technology,” said Andrew Odewahn, CTO at O’Reilly Media. “One of the things I appreciate most about Carina is the API it couldn’t be any simpler. The API allows us to create a new cluster that we simply spin up from the command line and can access within a minute. That flexibility gives us great power to do a lot of different things we might not have considered before because of the burden of managing infrastructure.”

“The Carina beta from Rackspace makes it fast and simple to start a Docker Swarm cluster. They have put the Docker experience front and center without any abstraction,” said Nick Stinemates, VP business development of Docker, Inc.  “You can get started in under a minute and pull images into a cluster straight from Docker Hub, or leverage existing Docker tools and plugins that natively “just work.” This is exciting as it builds on and partners with our existing community and ecosystem. The focus on container developer experience is paramount and they’re showing a commitment to it.”

Rackspace is committed to becoming the leading trusted provider for helping customers build, deploy and run container-based applications, with a vision of offering choice of cloud platform from public to private and enabling an easy-to-use experience. Carina is now available as a free beta offering on the Rackspace Public Cloud for US customers. Rackspace Launches Managed Security and Compliance Assistance Offering

New Customer Security Operations Center to Provide 24/7/365 Threat Intelligence, Monitoring and Security Analytics

SAN ANTONIO – Sept. 29, 2015 – Rackspace® (NYSE: RAX) today announced new Managed Security and Compliance Assistance offerings to assist customers in addressing data security, protecting critical business processes, and mitigating risks from potential cyberattacks and threats. These service offerings allow Rackspace to work with its customers to develop holistic security solutions and address compliance requirements that cover complex, multi-cloud environments.

Cybersecurity is a top priority for Rackspace and its customers. Rackspace Managed Security and Compliance Assistance lets customers leverage Rackspace security experts to help with strategic planning for best practice multi-cloud security, tactical day-to-day security monitoring and threat analysis to deter, detect and respond to potential threats around the clock.

“Every day, businesses are at risk of being affected by a security threat or data breach,” said Perry Robinson, vice president and general manager of Managed Security at Rackspace. “These threats often occur without warning, can be directed at any part of the business, and come from anywhere in the world. Damage from malicious parties can range from lost revenue and recovery costs to potential liability costs and compliance-related fines.”

Rackspace will provide onboarding consultation and deployment to deliver a tailored solution as well as manage customers’ environment on an ongoing basis to help detect and respond to security threats. Rackspace expertise in detection and deterrence can minimize the potential impact of an attack, while significantly lowering the total cost of ownership (TCO) over internally developed security operations centers and comparable managed service offerings.

“Cyberattacks are the new normal for companies and represent one of the realities of doing business today as technology becomes the lifeblood of our organizations,” said Brian Kelly, chief security officer at Rackspace. “Customers trust Rackspace for security expertise because we have 16 years of first-hand knowledge managing IT infrastructure and direct experience with today’s complex threats. Because of the scale and complexity of the technology environments that we manage, security is a top priority for Rackspace and our customers day in and day out.”

Managed Security

The Rackspace Managed Security offering is designed to detect and respond to advanced persistent threats (APTs) and other types of cyberattacks. The offering is tailored to customers’ business needs and backed by a 24/7/365 Customer Security Operations Center (CSOC) at Rackspace. The CSOC is located at Rackspace headquarters and will open in October. The following services will be a part of the Managed Security offering:

  • Host and Network Protection – Provides advanced host and network protection platforms targeted at zero-day and non-malware attacks as well as traditional compromise tactics.
  • Security Analytics – Utilizes a leading Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) platform paired with big data analytics platforms to collect and analyze security data from the customer’s environment.
  • Vulnerability Management – Rackspace utilizes scanning and agent technologies to understand the customer’s environment and uses this data to tailor our Customer Security Operations Center’s response to threats and attacks in the environment.
  • Threat Intelligence – Rackspace consumes more than 20 threat intelligence feeds, fusing the information together with our own internal data to respond to the changing threat landscape in real time.

Compliance Assistance

Rackspace Compliance Assistance is a combination of tooling and expertise to help customers achieve and maintain compliance and reporting goals for their environment. Compliance Assistance offers the following capabilities:

  • Configuration Hardening and Monitoring – Assigns security configuration profiles to hosts based on accepted standards such as those from the Center for Internet Security (CIS), as well as community best practices. Rackspace detects and logs deviations from these profiles in real-time to allow for comprehensive documentation and reduced vulnerability windows.
  • Patch Monitoring – Rackspace patch monitoring provides an understanding of what threats are applicable to an environment including what Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) are present in the environment.
  • User Monitoring – Monitors and documents user host access, authentication level, and login times to help ensure that customers can prove compliance with access controls.
  • File Integrity Management – Detects, reports, and documents changes to files on a host based on customers’ security and compliance requirements.

Given the challenges spanning limited security expertise, budget constraints, rapidly evolving security related compliance requirements and increasing adoption of multi-cloud IT services, Rackspace Managed Security and Compliance Assistance combines deep expertise and leading technology to allow customers to focus on their core business.

“Cloud vendors need to be more proactive and help their customers understand and manage security in the cloud, and with this new Managed Security offering, Rackspace is responding to that need,” said Christopher Wilder, practice head and senior analyst, cloud services at Moor Insights & Strategy. “As organizations increasingly adopt complex cloud environments and cyberattacks become more frequent, customers can benefit from the 24/7 security expertise and support from Rackspace to help them keep their information and data secure. These services are even more important to smaller and mid-sized firms who might not be able to find or afford the top security talent to run their IT organizations.”

At launch, the offering will be in limited availability for customers globally and will be serviced out of Rackspace U.S. offices. For more information on Rackspace Managed Security and Compliance Assistance, please visit: www.rackspace.com/security
