Office Hours Hangout: Why are Containers Important?

This week the Office Hours Hangout team spoke with Simon Jakesch and Jason Barnhill, two of the team behind Rackspace’s Containers as a Service product, Carina.

Containers are definitely a hot topic in the Cloud world, but the truth is, we’re still in the early adoption phase, and many of our customers are still developing their strategies around containers. I’ve highlighted a few moments of our conversation with Jason and Simon about containers, Carina, and where all of this technology is headed.  You can check them out below, with direct links to the relevant point in our conversation. Additionally, you can view the entire show, or listen to an audio-only podcast version.

So what are containers?

Simon started us off with a great description of containers, and why they’re important for developers, specifically their reliability and repeatability. Simon then went on to describe the ecosystem around containers, and the value those additional services add. It’s clear that containers are a new and growing tool for developers, and now we’ve provided a great way for to quickly and repeatably deploy them.

What advantages does Carina bring?

One of our viewers asked a great question: “Why not just spin up Docker on your own bare metal/OnMetal/Cloud Server?” Jason explained why we think Carina is a great option for our customers. We manage the environment and infrastructure, and keep it up to date. Carina provides simplicity for our users. “We, as the experts at Rackspace do that for you. You don’t have to worry about any of the aspects of the infrastructure; you just get in, run your containers, and build your application the way you want to.”

Additional benefits of containers

Jason and Simon are also excited about the way that containers help speed up time to market on releasing and updating applications. That, and the ease of use of Carina is definitely a major benefit, and should help drive more in the enterprise world to adopt containers, something that our panelists think we’re very close to. We think that there is a bright future for containers, and are happy Carina is a part of that future.

There were so many great points in this broadcast that it was difficult to pick just a few highlights to share here. I definitely recommend checking out the entire video. Thanks for watching. Be sure to check out our show every week — we recently highlighted some great new features and services from Rackspace, speaking with the teams behind Fanatical Support for AWS, and Rackspace Managed Security.
