Rackspace Austin Among Best Places To Work

Rackspace’s Austin office ranked No. 3 in the 2012 Austin Business Journal’s Best Places to Work. This marks the second time Rackspace Austin has made the list, and in just a year we climbed from No. 23 to No. 3.

The award, which was announced at a Hollywood-themed luncheon this week, recognizes Rackspace’s Austin office as among the top places to work in the city. Rackspace Austin placed third in the large business category. Last year we were in the medium business category, but our intense focus on growth and greatness bumped us up the ladder to the large business category.

The Austin Business Journal looked at Central Texas companies that have the best climate, team atmosphere, benefits and, most importantly, engaged employees. This year saw 268 companies nominated, an all-time high, according the ABJ. The pool was whittled down to 70 finalists in four distinct categories: micro, 10 to 20 employees; small, 21 to 50 employees; medium, 51 to 250 employees; and large, 251 employees and above.

Employees answered survey questions across multiple areas, assigning scores on a scale of one to six, where one is strongly disagree and six is strongly agree. From there, companies were assigned numerical scores in a host of categories and from there, they were compared and stack ranked. Categories included teamwork, retention risk, trust with co-workers, individual contribution, manager effectiveness, trust in leadership, job satisfaction and benefits.

More than 60  percent of Austin Rackers were surveyed, and the results show that Rackers love the Austin office – the average score of the responses was an awesome 5.33 out of 6. Some of the reasons Rackspace ranked so highly were due its community involvement; its health and fitness focus and opportunities; the fun, exciting office culture and environment; and the great events, contests and awards. Every quarter our most outstanding Austin Racker is awarded the Fanatical Fender and is recognized for their work, an Austin spin on Rackspace’s Fanatical Jacket Award (after all, Austin is the Live Music Capital of the World, right?).

The Austin office has a special focus on health and fitness with personal trainers holding sessions on-site three times per week and healthy lunch vendor options. We’re proud of our community involvement with Austin’s Habitat for Humanity Chapter and Austin Pets Alive. The office Culture Committee give a proper Austin twist to Rackspace’s cool culture, allowing Rackers to bring their dogs to work on Earth Day and holding monthly Third Thursdays mixers. San Antonio is less than 70 miles away and the free, daily shuttle between the San Antonio and Austin office has made working in two of Texas’ greatest cities easy for Rackers.

And while we’re stoked on placing No. 3, we’re not going to rest on our laurels. Our foot is firmly on the gas and we’re gunning for No. 1 next year as we continue to provide an awesome and engaging work environment. We’re pushing for Rackspace Austin to become an engineering hub and focus on developing outstanding products; sharpen our sales, support and foundation; and take advantage of Austin’s stellar talent pool.

Now boasting 408 Rackers, the Austin office grew from a staff of just eight when it opened in 2005. Our current spot, which we’ve been in since 2007, is now bursting at the seams with engaged Rackers. With our new focus on engineering, we look forward to the growth we’ll see in the coming years as a key player in Austin’s IT industry.

We’re honored to be recognized by Rackers and the ABJ as an office and company where employees are inspired to volunteer their best efforts every day and are excited to come to work and offer Fanatical Support.

Congratulations to the 70 finalists in this year’s Best Places to Work!  Thank you Austin Business Journal for this fantastic recognition. Thank you Austin for being an incredible city.  But, most of all, thank you Rackers for being Fanatical and making Rackspace one of the best places to work. Anywhere. Period!
