Rackspace Cloudvent Calendar Day 20: Attach A Running Cloud Server To A Cloud Network

In the spirit of the holiday season, I’m sharing some tips and features of our cloud that you may not know about. In this countdown I’ll have 24 posts for you, each covering a single topic or feature about Rackspace Cloud products. We’ll post one per day so keep checking back!

When Cloud Networks launched, you could not attach currently running servers to a network. You had to rebuild the server and attach it to the network at boot time. Since launch, we’ve added the ability to attach a currently running server to a network without rebuilding. This is done through a virtual interface.  You can use the rackspace-novaclient to create a virtual interface on your network, you just need the UUID of your Cloud Server and Cloud Network:

nova virtual-interface-create <NETWORK_ID> <SERVER_ID>

The Cloud Server will be assigned an IP address from your Cloud Network. Check back tomorrow for more!
