After a successful foray into private cloud and some experimentation in the public cloud, McKesson, an American healthcare company, embarked on a cloud-first strategy.
With Rackspace’s help, the company, which distributes pharmaceuticals and provides health information technology, medical supplies and care management tools to consumers, has seen savings of almost 50 percent as a result of its digital transformation.
That includes a data center migration that Microsoft recently recognized when it named Rackspace a finalist for its 2018 Datacenter Transformation Partner of the Year Award; one of just three finalists chosen out of more than 2,600 entries.
For many organizations like McKesson, moving to the cloud represents the next step in the evolution of their IT capabilities. But cloud adoption requires significant technical expertise and sizable staff requirements to migrate from a data center and configure applications to take full advantage of the public cloud’s many features and services.
Rackspace offers that expertise, working with organizations as a trusted partner to guide them every step of the way. As McKesson’s Director of Cloud Services, Vijay Thumma, noted, “Over the last couple of years, we’ve moved our traditional, virtualized environment into our private cloud.”
After that, McKesson started seriously looking at public cloud capabilities and the opportunity to start moving from a CAPEX to an OPEX model.
With differing levels of sophistication and complexity across the business units, making the leap was not going to be a one-size-fits all move. To reduce its dedicated data center footprint, centralize IT and better serve the needs of its customers throughout the business, McKesson enlisted Rackspace to help guide its cloud journey.
The company needed Rackspace to modernize applications, architect the right environment with strictly defined security and regulatory standards, build the business case, including buy-in for Microsoft Azure, acquire an end-to-end cloud lifecycle strategy partner to accelerate deployment and provide ongoing maintenance.
Rackspace worked with Thumma to help McKesson’s business units build the business case for public cloud, balance risk and compliance, and provide the best landing zone for individual workloads, while working with core foundational services to ensure adequate network security and account management. We also helped the team build customized environments for business units with varying degrees of cloud sophistication and implement sustainable solutions with minimal impact.
“The good thing about Rackspace was that they were able to focus on the cloud lifecycle,” Thumma said. “They were very smart about how to roll out these capabilities to each business unit.”

“The way we look at it, Rackspace is our partner, they’re not just a vendor.” Thumma concluded. “They’re an extension of our team. That’s the way we look at it at McKesson. We’re a team and it’s been working great.”
