When it comes to supporting non-profit organizations, the Rackspace Startup Program is here with open arms. Across the border to the south, Aporta, founded in 2010 in Monterrey, Mexico is an online donation portal where individuals can donate money to more than 6,000 Mexican non-profit organizations that are approved by the Mexican government. Donations can be made via credit or debit cards, and Aporta processes the transactions, acknowledges the gifts and forwards the money along with a report including donor information to the respective non-profits.
“The idea came as a result of understanding the slow and inefficient mechanisms available to support Hurricane Alex’s victims in and around Monterrey, Mexico in late June and early July of 2010” explains Aldo Alvarez, Aporta’s President. “After acknowledging this troubled situation, and with the desire to help, we started a detailed investigation of the non-profit organizations and fundraising in Mexico. As a result of this investigation, we found an extensive amount of inefficiencies in Mexico’s fundraising. Consequently, we decided to face the challenge and develop technology to reduce fundraising inefficiencies and create a larger philanthropic culture in Mexico.”
With technology and philanthropy on their side, Aporta was formed with backing from angel investors in Mexico and the United States, providing funding to develop the organization and allowing it to open an office in New York City along with the Monterrey headquarters. Aporta’s vision is to create a new fundraising mechanism, increase donations to specific non-profits with strategic missions, create measurable statistics about donation patterns in Mexico and bring the non-profits closer to their donors, forcing them to become more transparent. Overall, the Aporta goal is to create a portal that will benefit non-profit organizations, contributing donors and the citizens in need of assistance in Mexico.
“We are currently finishing the development of our technology, integrating all the payment processing mechanisms and moving our infrastructure to Cloud servers at Rackspace. Aporta in 2012 will strive to be the leading online portal in Mexico. We expect to have the technology so that all non-profits are able to upload their profiles, causes and information. And donors will be able to sign into an account, support the causes that they believe in and generally follow and participate with Aporta as their recurrent option for donations,” concludes Alvarez.
It’s a desire within Aporta that both the donors’ and the non-profits’ expectations of charitable giving and receiving are not only reached, but exceeded. Citizens of Mexico are blessed to have an organization like Aporta on their side. Helping facilitate the Aporta dream by providing a world class Cloud Computing platform to build the organization upon is truly fulfilling for the Rackspace Startup Program.
