Crowdsourcing is a very real and important business idea. The word crowdsourcing combines the words “crowd” and “outsourcing” to mean the practice of obtaining needed services, ideas or content by soliciting contributions from a large group of people and especially from the online community, rather than from traditional employees or suppliers.
The basic idea is to tap into the collective intelligence of the public at large to complete business-related tasks that a company would normally either perform itself or outsource to a third-party provider. Essentially, it’s taking work and outsourcing it to a crowd.
CrowdTogether, a Rackspace cloud customer and member of the Rackspace Startup Program, offers a free crowdsourcing platform that marketing managers, event promoters and entertainers can use to activate and engage their community members. Crowdsourcing can turn consumers’ passion, enthusiasm and creativity into marketing and promotions campaigns by giving them an entirely new way to connect with a brand.
Founded in 2010 by Richard Spiegel and Carl Rosenberg, Austin-based CrowdTogether’s mission is to service the growing demand for social media tools that facilitate community engagement.
“CrowdTogether provides a free social media marketing platform built around crowd sourcing,” explains Spiegel, the startup’s CEO and co-founder. “CrowdTogether’s platform offers a range of contest choices from apparel design to photo and audio/video. Users can easily setup a fully branded, stand-alone crowdsourcing campaign site then invite their community of fans to participate.”
CrowdTogether was built to give brands a way to activate, engage and connect with their communities through the empowerment of crowdsourcing. CrowdTogether delivers end-to-end value with robust back-end management tools that give campaign managers full control and provides a complete email database of all participants for each contest.
“We are passionate about social and community engagement and continue to grow as more and more individuals and companies utilize our platform,” concludes Spiegel. “This year we will be totally re-launching the platform with a more robust feature set and social analytics tools.”
The Rackspace Startup Program is helping facilitate the CrowdTogether dream by providing a world class open cloud computing platform upon which it can build its business.
