Rackspace Startup Program Spotlight On Double Stallion Games: Mobilizing Arcade-Style Games

While the PC is still the most popular gaming device for many online gamers, smartphones and tablets are quickly catching up. Rackspace Startup Program startup Double Stallion Games is an independent game studio based in Montreal, Canada, that focuses on mobile games. The company’s mission is to bring arcade-style games to mobile devices the right way with HD cartoon graphics and great touch controls.

Double Stallion’s first offering, Big Action Mega Fight (BAMF), is on the iOS mobile platform and coming soon to Android. In BAMF, you play Brick Strongarm, fighting in the city of Megatropolis to rid the city of crime and corruption. BAMF takes inspiration from classic arcade brawlers, but has an interesting modern twist and great controls.

“Double Stallion Games formed as a company in Execution Labs, a first-of-its-kind game incubator, also in Montreal,” explains Double Stallion Games CEO, Dan Menard. “The team shares many members of Crankshaft Games, but also includes new faces.”

As Double Stallion Games went through the startup accelerator program at Execution Labs, the team was introduced to the Rackspace Startup Program.

“Our company operates many websites, and we prefer to have direct control over these, so Rackspace makes a lot of sense. One year of essentially free hosting for Double Stallion is simply amazing. It has allowed us to grow without worrying about costs. We’ll be expanding our services in 2014, now that the game is launched, and we know Rackspace will be there every step of the way. Currently, we use a variety of services like our JIRA, backups and game backend.”

Having a team of Rackspace experts available has freed Double Stallion up to focus on crafting games, which Menard said is itself an art form. The company’s developers are the artists.

“Our team of four developers is absolutely amazing,” says Menard. “We are all creative people with a long history of playing, enjoying and designing video games. Games are wonderful art projects because they mix practical, technical and creative disciplines into an awesome experience.”

The team of gamers at Double Stallion is set on upgrading the BAMF offering with new features and content, says Menard. Looking ahead at 2014, Menard is optimistic about the growth of Double Stallion Games as it continues to beef up BAMF to add new characters and enemies while also producing its next new game.

“We are always driven by making better games and delivering new and meaningful experiences to players,” Menard says. “We are working on bringing new features and content to the initial version of BAMF. And, we’re also working on the Android version, which will be coming very soon.
