With over 600,000 apps in the Apple App Store, and over 25,000 submitted every week, the number of apps on the market right now is staggering. The biggest problem that application developers face today is discoverability. Everyone wants to be the next Instagram or Angry Birds. But how do you rise above the noise? ooomf is an engagement platform that is reinventing the way apps and app makers are explored and discovered today.
ooomf was born out of the Founder Fuel accelerator program. Two members of the ooomf team participated in a Startup Weekend hackathon event in Montreal, Canada and saw so many cool apps being built. But many of those apps had difficulties keeping the momentum going after the event. The goal at ooomf is to give mobile developers a platform and the tools to create a loyal user base during the entire life cycle of their app; from pre-launch, to launch, to post-launch.
“This was the inspiration for ooomf,” explains Mikael Cho, co-founder and CEO of ooomf. “We wanted to create a place where developers could go and tell their app’s story and cultivate a following, whether their app is just an idea, a prototype or already in the App Store. From our perspective, it’s never too early to start building a following.”
Marc Nager, CEO of Startup Weekend adds “ooomf has an interesting approach to solving the issues of app discovery. That’s the reason we’ve been working together with them by testing ooomf in several cities.”
Early in September, ooomf announced $500,000 in seed funding. Led by Montreal-based early stage seed fund Real Ventures, the round also included BDC Venture Capital and select angel investors. ooomf is getting set to release its iPhone app. Think of the ooomf app as Flixster but for apps. The ooomf site will showcase apps that are coming soon to the Apple App Store, and you can view app demo videos, early screenshots and app release dates.
Team ooomf decided early on to build its business on the Rackspace platform. “When we launched our offering we had tremendous amounts of app data to manage,” says Cho. “As a result, we chose the Rackspace Cloud to handle this, which resulted in no extra server management and helped us handle our traffic.” The ooomf web platform will be released in public beta within the next month as well.
