Querium, a Rackspace Startup Program member, offers a mobile learning software platform that delivers personalized, bite-sized lessons to help students master critical skills to prepare them for college and beyond. The startup was founded with the goal of helping 24 million students master critical math and science skills and enable them to achieve their career goals. Querium’s unique software products are designed for digital natives and hosted on the Rackspace Cloud.
Querium’s initial products aimed to address the high dropout rate of first year community college students in Texas. To date they have helped over 8,500 students. Querium launched TSI Math Prep in January 2014 and the solution is currently in beta trials at eight Texas colleges. Querium’s first offering, the Online Pre-Assessment Activity (PAA), was created to meet TSI Rule §4.55(b) and is now used by 14 colleges and universities across Texas.
“Querium started in Austin, where the founding team has experience building and leading successful startup companies in education, software platforms, mobile product design, wireless applications and gaming development,” explains Patti Smith, CMO at Querium. “The management and board of Querium have over 100 years of combined experience in delivering award-winning math and science education products to learners as well as successful delivery of complex software solutions.”
Kent Fuka, Querium founder and CEO, built his career creating innovative software products to solve grand challenges and has participated in three successful IPOs of technology companies. Fuka explains that a Querium prototype started at his previous company.
“I had built a prototype of what became the first Querium product at my last company,” he says. “We had the ability to take that technology out and start Querium to make it available for licensing to a large number of different channel partners. We think we can change student lives for the better. We are trying to help college success for student across the country.”
Smith adds that Querium has aggressive goals of the number of students it’d like to help with its software.
“We’re changing students’ lives by helping them get into and complete college successfully so that they can attain their career and personal goals,” concludes Smith. “We will be assisting many Texas colleges meet state requirements, as well as giving their students a tool to enable them to be placed in college ready courses in math and science. Our ultimate goal is to help 24 million learners attain their dreams of a career!
With the idea for the product in place, Querium began its search for a trusted hosting partner. Querium Chief Architect Alan May, who has engineered and architected software at several Austin startups, including HomeAway, GTECH, PeopleAdmin, and Isochron Data, says he knew Rackspace was the right choice.
“Rackspace has been a great partner,” May says. “With the Managed Cloud offering, it feels like we have an entire operations team behind us. I cannot say enough about the quality of support – the team helps us monitor our systems, consults with us on best practices and has always been quick to respond to our requests. Setting up servers, databases, email delivery, backups, alerts and other services have been quick and painless. Our developers focus on the application logic and don’t spend much time on the infrastructure. Rackspace has been steadily rolling out new features and we’ve enjoyed consuming them.”
May adds that customer support and future growth were key in Querium’s decision to host with Rackspace.
“Rackspace has a reputation for providing outstanding customer care, and when you are launching new products it’s critical to have partners that can support you 24×7 to make sure products are reliable and secure,” May says. “We are delivering mission critical applications that handle student sensitive data accessed by colleges and students initially throughout Texas but eventually nationwide. We wanted a hosting partner who could grow with us.”
