Sportybird: A Geekdom Startup Building A Community Around Youth Soccer

Encouraging your children to play sports is one way to help them learn skills that can be vital to success later in their life, especially teamwork, which is essential both on and off the field.

Sportybird, a member of the Rackspace Startup Program, makes a free game statistics software for youth soccer coaches, with live game updates and game streaming for parents and fans.

Coaches or parents can track each game using the Sportybird app. Family and friends never miss a game with live scores, mobile game alerts and streaming play by plays. And, after every game, the coach can review an analysis of each game to determine ways to improve his team and players.

Josh Swank, co-founder and CEO of Sportybird, has been a youth soccer coach for several years. His partner and co-founder, John Trenholm, the CTO of the Sportybird, has been working in the tech world for several years, developing a deep passion for using data and analytics to solve problems.

“We saw a problem,” explains Swank. “By nature, we are both problem solvers and set out to help figure out a solution. Youth sports, particularly youth soccer is currently in the age of discovery on how to use technology in the sport. As such, we felt we could use technology to further the youth soccer experience for all parties passionately involved.”

Trenholm views the startup as a way to connect the stakeholders involved in youth soccer. “The youth sports market is a very large and, seemingly, unorganized one,” says Trenholm. “Coupling the unorganized with soccer game stats to help further connect families, coaches, players, and scouts sounded like a cool concept.”

From the beginning, Swank and Trenholm were seeking a place where they could consistently share and bounce their ideas off of the people around them to push their startup idea forward. Sportybird chose Geekdom as a place to set up its business. Geekdom is a new kind of collaborative co-working space located in downtown San Antonio, Texas, where entrepreneurs, technologists, developers, makers and creatives help each other build businesses and other cool things together.

Geekdom surrounded the Sportybird team with like-minded entrepreneurs with whom they could collaborate. It also offered great views of downtown, whiteboards and plenty of coffee. “Geekdom has offered us the opportunity to develop relationships with sophisticated investors, other tech startup teams, and proven successful tech teams,” says Swank. “This diversified network has proven invaluable for us as we have moved through the different stages of a startup company.”

Another benefit for entrepreneurs working on startups at Geekdom is entry into the Rackspace Startup Program. Sportybird chose Rackspace for its commitment to Fanatical Support and also the product offerings.  “When there is a problem we can contact Rackspace support and get our issue resolved very quickly,” says Trenholm.

Looking forward, Sportybird hopes to expand nationally and build a community around youth soccer.

“We are very excited about our opportunities in 2014,” concludes Swank. “We are currently in talks with several state associations and leagues about how they can implement our software into their seasons. As our website states, ‘our goal is to help passionate coaches, intelligent college scouts, devoted parents, and close family friends to become a community of fans cheering on and promoting the development of players and victories of teams across the United States.’ In 2014, we will continue to move towards this goal.”

The Rackspace Startup Program is a proud partner of Geekdom, which is helping Sportybird build its youth soccer game stat software on a world-class cloud platform. Drop the Startup Team a note and let us know if you need any help building your startup.
