The Journey To The Open Cloud Through The Eyes Of One Very Proud Dad

Rackspace is leading a revolution in the cloud computing world by opening the cloud. Our cloud is built on OpenStack™, which means it’s powered by community-contributed code and if users choose our cloud they are not locked in. It’s a compelling story, but a complicated one to tell. As storytellers, it is the job of our team to tell the Rackspace story to the variety of people we engage in conversations, whether they’re highly technical, or new to the cloud.

This story takes you on a journey to the open cloud, through the eyes of one very proud dad, beginning with a light in a cave.

The Inspiration

We’ve all been inspired at one time or another. This story was inspired by Chipotle’s short film, Back to the Start, which I saw as a commercial that aired during the 2012 Grammy Awards. It’s a story told through the eyes of a farmer that follows the evolution of raising livestock. It begins with raising animals on open and free grazes to raising them in confinement with hormone injections due to the pressures of making profits. The story goes back to the start when the farmer realizes that confining animals and injecting them with hormones is not the right way and he frees the animals. Chipotle is leading a new revolution in farming — it is going back to the start. The story is about what Chipotle believes in.

The Story

Rackspace is changing how technology is built and consumed, and what we do powers the everyday things people do on the web. We had to tell this story to the world in a way that was easy to consume. We wanted to ensure that we kept the story simple, that it triggered an emotion and that it was shareable. Think about all of the memories you’ve chosen to capture. You’ll realize that they’re similar to the memories of others around you. As humans, we’ve captured memories since the beginning of time, but the ways in which we capture and share these memories has evolved over time. This story takes you through the evolution of that technology.

Before leaving in 2016, Angela ran integrated marketing campaigns for Rackspace. She started in 2003 and did everything from Linux support, account management, sales, product marketing and marketing. She left Rackspace in 2005 to work for PEER 1 Hosting but returned in 2009 because she was interested in the cloud computing movement. Angela is a strong believer in the power of storytelling.
