We’ve been getting lots of requests from developers and DBAs about SQL Server 2012 (previously known as “Denali”). Today we are pleased to announce the availability of Microsoft SQL Server 2012, in Web and Standard Editions, on the Rackspace Cloud. We are making this available in Cloud Servers, including Cloud Servers with a Managed Service Level.
This is the latest installment of Microsoft’s popular database and it includes a number of improvements over previous versions. Look out for the improvements to AlwaysOn for higher availability, Contained Databases, which can help with some of the authentication challenges associated with moving databases and FileTables for apps that manage unstructured data that lives as files outside of the database. You probably have your own favourites, but if you don’t yet then check out MSDN, especially the SQL Server 2012 “General Information” page, the “What’s new” page and the “Edition Comparison” page.
As with other licensed software available on Cloud Servers, you pay a simple hourly rate. SQL Server 2012 prices are unchanged from SQL Server 2008 R2 which, by the way, will continue to be available on Cloud Servers. To calculate the total price of a Cloud Server running SQL Server 2012 or 2008 R2, simply take the standard Windows Cloud Servers price, and add:
- 45p/hour for SQL Standard Edition or 4p/hour for SQL Web Edition (2GB – 15GB servers)
- 68p/hour for SQL Standard Edition or 6p/hour for SQL Web Edition (30GB servers)
Note that SQL Server 2012 is not available on Cloud Servers smaller than 2GB.
This launch applies only to Cloud Servers. If you are interested in deploying SQL Server 2012 in a dedicated environment, at this time we can provide you with Licensing and Installation services covered by our beta terms. We are working hard to provide you with fully supported SQL Server 2012 in the near future, as part of our managed hosting services. If you want to start using SQL Server 2012 in a dedicated environment for new apps, app migrations, or simply to kick the tires and check out the new improvements in SQL Server Management Studio and T-SQL, then please call us a call on +44 (0)20 8734 2600 or contact your account team.
We are really looking forward to seeing your existing apps migrated to SQL Server 2012 Standard and Web Editions, and hope that you can take advantage of these improvements for your new applications.
