Using Object Storage In The Cloud To Decrease Load Times

While patience may be a virtue, no one likes to wait when it comes loading a website. Each second that ticks away while your page loads results in a 16 percent decrease in customer satisfaction. Fortunately, whether you are hosting on a virtualized or physical server, you can leverage the Content Delivery Network (CDN) that powers our Cloud Files product to load your page much faster.

By moving your static content such as images, pictures, videos, CSS or Javascript from your central server to a CDN-enabled container in Cloud Files, you can load the page much faster. Instead of having to route the visitor’s request to one particular data center where your server is located, the CDN routes that information to an edge, or Points of Presence (POP), that is physically closer to the request. This simple change can prevent your server from being overloaded, resulting in a better user experience. In fact, you are able to host static websites and even blogs like Octopress with Cloud Files.

With Rackspace Cloud Files, you also have the ability to give your containers a more customized name by using CNAMES. For example, instead of having a URL such as, you can opt a shorter or branded URL like In addition to making the link to the content more of a user-friendly format, this also allows you to “vouch” for the content. Some browser settings prevent images from locations outside of the domain that is being visited. Because you are the person who controls the DNS of your site, a custom CNAME tells the browser that, “I know this data and where it is coming from.”

One thing to keep in mind is that when you enable the CDN on your container, the contents of that container will be public. Prior to doing this, the container is hidden from the public Internet. Keep this in mind before you make the decision of when to turn on the CDN capabilities for your files.
